Zach Johnson Keeps Tiger Woods in Mind for Ryder Cup Selection

Tiger Woods potentially features in the US Ryder Cup team – according to Zach Johnson, at least. Ahead of the Sony Open in Hawaii, US captain Johnson hinted at the possibility of selecting Woods if the 47-year-old doesn’t qualify automatically.

“I’d consider Tiger if he’s posting competitive numbers and showing signs of being in the mix,” Johnson stated during a media briefing on Wednesday.

“In discussions with the team, including Tiger himself, I trust his commitment to our cause. His dedication to the team and future Cups is unquestionable,” Johnson emphasized. “I believe he’ll be candid about his readiness to compete, and we’ll assess accordingly,” he added cautiously.

Last year, Johnson affirmed Woods’ role in the US Ryder Cup plans, noting Woods’ commitment despite uncertainties. “Given his stature and commitment, I foresee him contributing to our team in some capacity,” Johnson assured.

However, Johnson acknowledged that Woods’ health poses a challenge. “He’s faced recent setbacks that complicate matters, including travel limitations,” the captain acknowledged.

Woods has struggled with injuries, particularly since a serious car accident in February 2021 drastically curtailed his playing time.

The 47-year-old withdrew from December’s Hero World Challenge due to foot issues and showed signs of mobility challenges during The Match later that month.

In a candid interview after his accident, Woods hinted at a selective approach to tournament participation akin to golf legend Ben Hogan’s late career.

“I may play the tour occasionally, not full-time, focusing on selected events,” Woods revealed to Golf Digest in 2021. “This is my reality now, and I’ve come to accept it,” he concluded.

The upcoming Ryder Cup, set for September 25 to October 1, marks its first in Italy, hosted at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome. Team US reclaimed the Ryder Cup in 2021 with a dominant display against Europe at Whistling Straits.
