The highly anticipated second season of the Netflix series Wednesday is set to return after becoming one of the streaming platform’s most successful shows.
Created by Al Gough and Miles Millar, the Addams Family spin-off, directed by Tim Burton, focuses on Wednesday Addams, a stoic teenager with psychic powers attempting to solve a murder mystery.
The show, which debuted in November 2022, quickly broke records. It stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, following in the footsteps of Lisa Loring from the 1960s series and Christina Ricci from the 1991 movie adaptation.
Now, a new behind-the-scenes teaser from Netflix promises the upcoming season will be “bigger and more twisted.” Ortega, as Wednesday, quips in the teaser, “If we showed you any more, your eyes would bleed, and I’m not that generous,” before playfully adding, “Let’s play dolls.”
The release of the second season has been delayed due to the Hollywood writers’ strikes. While production was initially expected to speed up for a 2024 release, *Deadline* now reports that fans should anticipate a 2025 release at the earliest.
Netflix has not confirmed an official release date, though filming is set to begin in Ireland soon, moving from its original location in Romania.
Jenna Ortega will reprise her role as Wednesday, and Emma Meyer is expected to return as her best friend, Enid Sinclair, as the next season will delve deeper into their friendship.
Although the full cast has not yet been revealed, it was announced in April that Steve Buscemi, known for his roles in Reservoir Dogs and Fargo, will join the ensemble.
However, reports indicate that Percy Hynes White, who played Wednesday’s love interest Xavier Thorpe, will not return after allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.
The creators, Gough and Millar, have hinted that more members of the Addams family could be introduced in season two, suggesting a stronger family presence in the storyline.
While the first season focused on Wednesday’s experiences at Nevermore Academy and her romantic relationships, the finale concluded with the school shutting down. Season two will pivot to a new mystery, moving away from the Hyde plotline that dominated season one.
Fans hoping for more romantic subplots may be disappointed, as the upcoming season will move away from love triangles, instead emphasizing horror and the quirky elements of the show.
Ortega told, “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more… you don’t want to take yourself too seriously with vampires, werewolves, and superpowers.”
She added, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
In addition to focusing more on the horror elements, season two will further explore themes of friendship, particularly between Wednesday and Enid.
The show’s creators are eager to expand on their dynamic now that Wednesday has taken her first steps toward forming friendships, as seen when she hugged Enid in the season finale.
“We want to complicate all of those relationships moving forward,” the creators told. “For us, the show is really about female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid at the center.”
Additionally, the relationship between Wednesday and her mother, Morticia Addams, will be explored further in the new season. Now that Morticia understands her daughter’s psychic abilities, it opens the door to new developments in their dynamic.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia, teased that season two will be “bigger and more twisted than you can ever imagine.”
