Disappointing news for fans of “The Goonies” has surfaced, as recent rumors about a sequel to Richard Donner’s 1985 film have been debunked. Earlier this month, The Sun suggested that “The Goonies 2” was set to begin filming next summer with many original cast members returning, but actors Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton have dismissed these claims.
On Instagram, Plimpton clarified, “There is no ‘Goonies 2’ script or any official involvement. Spielberg is not directing, and the whole thing is not happening. What’s real is to CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!”
Feldman also took to X (formerly Twitter) to state that he had “no information” regarding any development of a sequel. The last important update about a possible sequel was in 2014 when Variety reported that Donner was looking to bring the original cast back together. At that time, Sean Astin expressed his strong belief that “The Goonies 2” would eventually come to fruition, even saying he’d bet his children on it. However, Donner passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
The original cast of “The Goonies” also featured Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan. The film, produced by Steven Spielberg, follows a group of children who find a treasure map leading to the legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy’s treasure while being pursued by a criminal family. Despite the current lack of a sequel, the excitement for “The Goonies 2” remains high due to the strong fan reaction to the false reports.
