The Kansas City Chiefs have parted ways with defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs following a string of legal issues in Alabama. Buggs, 27, was arrested multiple times over the offseason, culminating in a domestic violence/burglary charge in Tuscaloosa on June 16.
Prior to this, he faced charges on May 30 related to the alleged neglect of two dogs under his care, resulting in severe malnourishment and the euthanasia of one of the animals. His bail for the animal cruelty charges was subsequently revoked after the domestic violence arrest, leading to his current incarceration in Tuscaloosa County Jail.
Buggs’ agent, Trey Robinson, has suggested that these legal troubles stem from efforts to shut down a hookah lounge owned by Buggs in Tuscaloosa, framing his client as a victim of a targeted campaign.
Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 after playing two seasons at the University of Alabama, Buggs also had stints with the Detroit Lions before joining the Chiefs as a practice squad member earlier this year. Despite being re-signed to a futures contract in February, his release marks a swift end to his tenure with the team.
The Chiefs have encountered a tumultuous offseason with several players facing legal issues. Wide receiver Rashee Rice was involved in a high-speed car crash in Dallas, resulting in charges of aggravated assault and collision involving injury.
Offensive linemen Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick were arrested on marijuana possession charges in Johnson County, Kansas, adding to the team’s off-field challenges as they prepare for the upcoming season.
