Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Giants were in the market for a fresh face at quarterback, targeting a few promising prospects within reach of their No. 6 pick. However, when attempts to trade up for a higher selection fell through, the team shifted gears and focused on bolstering the wide receiver corps instead of drafting a new signal-caller for development.
The Giants selected LSU’s Malik Nabers, a solid choice at wide receiver. While Nabers brings undeniable talent, his success hinges on a quarterback who can consistently get him the ball and keep the offense moving—something veteran Daniel Jones has struggled to provide.
Jones, who inherited the quarterback position from two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning, has underperformed during his tenure with New York, leading to doubts about his future as the starter.
In the Giants’ season opener, Jones once again faltered, failing to ignite the offense. After the game, he acknowledged the disappointment, saying, “Obviously, we expected to play much better than we did today. A lot of things we didn’t do well. I thought we had a good week of preparation and a good training camp.”
With the Giants now intent on building their offense around Nabers, Jones could find himself on a short leash. Rumors have already swirled about a potential quarterback change before the season even began, and head coach Brian Daboll, who might be coaching for his own future, won’t have the luxury of patience if Jones fails to deliver in the opening weeks. Time is ticking for Jones to prove his value, or he could soon be watching from the sidelines.
