The New York Mets are unlikely to pursue Zack Britton, despite his potential fit for their bullpen needs. The left-handed reliever, who is not expected to return to the Yankees this season, is seeking a one-year contract. However, sources indicate the Mets are not likely to sign him.
According to MLBtraderumors.com, the Mets, although present at Britton’s recent showcase along with five other teams, have reservations about adding him to their roster.
Currently, Brooks Raley is the only left-hander expected to feature in the Mets’ bullpen, so Britton would have provided valuable southpaw depth. However, the Mets favor relievers with minor league options, allowing them to rotate fresh arms in and out of the minors as needed.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported earlier this month that the Mets had shown interest in Britton, noting his past success as a closer in Baltimore under Buck Showalter and his connection with new Mets coach Dom Chiti. Despite this, the team seems to prefer signing a younger left-hander with minor league options to maintain roster flexibility.
