Novak Djokovic silenced any doubts about his hamstring injury affecting his performance at the Australian Open with a decisive 6-3 6-4 6-0 victory over Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena in the first round in Melbourne.

The match presented a tough challenge for Djokovic, as the world No. 75, Carballés Baena, fought hard in the opening two sets. Yet, Djokovic demonstrated his resilience by delivering a spectacular third set, setting the stage for his quest for a record-extending 10th Australian Open title.

The crowd in Melbourne greeted Djokovic warmly, reflecting the support he had received during his recent Adelaide warmup victory. This match marked his first Australian Open appearance since his controversial deportation a year ago.

In his post-match interview, Djokovic expressed his gratitude, saying, “The atmosphere was unbelievable, and I appreciate everyone staying so late. The reception was beyond my wildest dreams.”

He added, “I’m thrilled to be back in Australia and on this court where I’ve experienced some of my greatest successes. This court is the most special to me. The more you win on a certain court, the more comfortable and confident you become. If I had to choose, it would be night sessions on Rod Laver Arena every time.”

Djokovic’s win extended his unbeaten streak in Australia to 35 matches, and the contrast in effort between the players was evident from the start. After an intense opening 19 minutes, Djokovic’s superior condition became apparent as Carballés Baena began to show signs of fatigue.

Despite concerns about Djokovic’s heavily strapped left thigh, the 21-time Grand Slam champion swiftly dismissed any doubts. He rallied from a 0-40 deficit in the fifth game, won five consecutive points, and broke Carballés Baena’s serve, taking a 5-2 lead in the first set.

Carballés Baena, undeterred by the first-set loss, continued to play aggressively and defensively. A pivotal 28-shot rally in the second set, which Djokovic won after a remarkable chase, led to a break of serve and a subsequent hold to love, giving Djokovic a two-set advantage.

The third set saw Djokovic at his best, winning 16 of 17 points and breaking Carballés Baena early to establish a 3-0 lead. Djokovic’s dominant performance in this set underscored his formidable form, sending a clear message to the rest of the draw.

The match concluded with Djokovic closing out the final set without dropping a game, leaving no doubt about his status as a top contender for the Australian Open title. Despite Carballés Baena’s commendable performance in the first two sets, Djokovic’s exceptional display demonstrated why he remains a favorite in the tournament.
