Mazda Introduces 2024 CX-90: Three-Row Hybrid SUV Combining Miata Tech and 340-HP I6

Mazda CX-90 (Mazda)

Mazda has been heralding the virtues of its latest vehicle, the CX-90, for several weeks now. This Japanese brand promises a blend of power and efficiency, built on a rear-wheel-drive platform infused with sporty characteristics.

It aims to evoke emotion not only through its driving dynamics but also through its curvaceous exterior that accommodates three rows of seats. The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has finally been disclosed, boasting a maximum of 340 horsepower, making it Mazda’s most powerful production vehicle to date.

CX-90 is a lift from conventional SUV (Mazda)

It’s a hybrid offering with options that include varying degrees of electric propulsion. Inside, the cabin accommodates eight passengers, blending modern luxury with traditional Japanese aesthetics, and incorporates influences from Mazda’s iconic MX-5 Miata for a sportier SUV experience.

There are two hybrid options available, both utilizing an innovative transmission. Mazda’s turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine, previously introduced with the CX-60, now powers the CX-90 with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, distributed to all four wheels.

This setup includes a mild hybrid system with an electric motor assisting at low speeds. Alternatively, Mazda offers a PHEV e-Skyactiv powertrain featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, also to all four wheels.

A 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery enhances electric-only travel capabilities, although Mazda has yet to confirm specific range figures for the CX-90. Regardless of the chosen engine, all-wheel drive and an advanced eight-speed automatic transmission are standard, replacing traditional torque converters for smoother, more efficient power delivery.

Mazda’s Kinematic Posture Control, borrowed from the MX-5 Miata, enhances cornering stability by subtly applying brake pressure to the inside rear wheel, ensuring a more controlled and responsive steering feel.

Inside the CX-90, Mazda emphasizes luxury and functionality with a 12.3-inch center infotainment screen, complemented by tactile controls for convenience features like climate control.

The interior blends Nappa leather, wood, and chrome accents, with a dash adorned in fabric featuring traditional Japanese stitching. Details on passenger space and cargo capacity have yet to be disclosed.

In terms of design, the CX-90 departs from conventional SUV aesthetics with a more organic, curved profile. Its rear design prioritizes interior space for three rows of seating, while various trim packages offer customization options such as chrome accents and 21-inch wheels.

The exterior introduces a new Artisan Red color option, complemented by Mazda’s suite of i-Activsense driver assistance systems, including standard features like active cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

While Mazda has officially uncovered the 2024 CX-90, specifics such as performance metrics, fuel economy, pricing, and production details remain undisclosed. Mazda anticipates revealing more information in the near future as the CX-90 approaches its release date.
