Scottie Barnes, the All-Star guard for the Toronto Raptors, is preparing to sign a significant five-year maximum rookie extension, valued potentially at $270 million, sources confirmed on Monday. His agent, Bill Duffy of WME, held discussions with Raptors executives Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster, aiming to finalize the deal by July 6 when the league’s moratorium ends.

This prospective contract, which would be the largest in Raptors history, guarantees Barnes $225 million. It includes provisions for additional earnings should he achieve milestones like All-NBA team selections, All-Defensive team honors, or MVP recognition. This contract underscores Barnes’ pivotal role as the team’s franchise player and signals the Raptors’ commitment to building their future around the young star.

Barnes, who will turn 23 in August, had a standout season, earning his first All-Star nod. He averaged impressive statistics of 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. His all-around contributions placed him in elite company alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo as the only player to achieve at least one per game in all those statistical categories.

In addition to his individual achievements, Barnes made history by becoming the first Raptors player since Chris Bosh in 2004-05 to record 1,000 points, 75 steals, and 75 blocks in a single season. Despite missing the final 22 games due to injury, he led the team in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks, highlighting his crucial role in their lineup.

Since being selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 draft, Barnes has swiftly validated his potential, culminating in him being named the NBA Rookie of the Year. This upcoming extension not only secures his financial future but also solidifies his position as a cornerstone player for the Raptors, promising a bright future for the franchise under his leadership.
