Mookie Betts, the Dodgers’ star shortstop, suffered a broken left hand after being hit by a 97.9 mph fastball from Dan Altavilla during Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The former MVP and seven-time All-Star fell to the ground in pain and was later diagnosed with a fracture that won’t require surgery.
Betts, who has been having an MVP-type season, will see a hand specialist on Monday and is expected to miss some time. Manager Dave Roberts expressed sympathy for Betts, saying, “It’s a big blow…he’s having an incredible season.” The Dodgers won the game 3-0, but the injury overshadowed the victory.
The pitch hit Betts at the top of the hand, and trainers and Roberts quickly tended to him. Altavilla said there was no intent behind the pitch, which “slipped arm-side.” Royals manager Matt Quatraro also expressed regret over the incident.
Miguel Rojas will take over as the Dodgers’ starting shortstop, with Kiké Hernández also getting time at the position. Shohei Ohtani will likely move into the leadoff spot.
Despite the injury, the Dodgers remain confident, with Roberts saying, “That’s part of baseball. You’ve got to move forward.” Betts, who will be out for an undetermined amount of time, said he’ll use the break to rest and come back stronger.
