Barcelona Femení has set a new benchmark by becoming the first football team to secure 50 consecutive league wins. This milestone was achieved with a decisive 7-0 victory over Levante Las Planas at the Estadi Johan Cruyff on Wednesday, a venue where they have maintained an undefeated record since its opening in 2019.

Asisat Oshoala, an international player from Nigeria, scored a hat trick, while Ana-Maria Crnogorčević contributed two goals, and Vicky López and Mariona Caldentey added goals in the second half, culminating in a commanding win.

The team’s unbeaten streak dates back to June 2021, following a 4-3 defeat to Atlético Madrid. During this period, they have netted 247 goals, averaging nearly five per match, and have allowed just 19 goals.

Under the guidance of head coach Jonatan Giráldez, Barcelona Femení completed an undefeated league season last year and continues this form, currently leading the league by four points with two games in hand.

Despite their league success, Barcelona experienced a setback in the Women’s Champions League, losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich in the group stage in December. Nonetheless, this defeat has not hindered their league performance in the new year.

The team’s dynamic play and roster of talented players have drawn record-breaking crowds. In March 2022, 91,553 fans attended the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou, setting the record for the highest attendance at a women’s football match. Barcelona capitalized on the support, defeating their rivals 5-2.

Currently, Barcelona is engaged in a dispute with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding the alleged fielding of an ineligible player in the Copa de la Reina. Facing potential disqualification from the tournament, the club has vowed to appeal the decision.

“FC Barcelona announces that the Club will continue to fight for the Women’s team’s rights after they were sanctioned by the Competition Committee for fielding an ineligible line-up, with an appeal to be presented in due course,” the club stated.

“Should the sanction not be revoked on appeal, FC Barcelona will take every possible action, as it is considered that the line-up was deemed ineligible due to technicalities in this case.”
