According to the BBC, Gautam Gambhir has been named the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir steps into the role following the resignation of his former teammate Rahul Dravid, whose contract recently concluded. At 42, Gambhir previously led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an Indian Premier League title in May.
“India is my identity, and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. It is a great honor for me to return, albeit in a different role. But my goal remains the same as always – to make every Indian proud,” Gambhir stated.
Gambhir made his debut for India in 2003 and played over 10,000 matches across all formats before retiring in 2016. His first assignment as head coach will be the upcoming Test tour to Sri Lanka later this month.
India recently clinched the T20 World Cup title in Bridgetown, Barbados, marking their first victory in the tournament since 2007.
