The Reason Michael Jordan Isn’t Seen in His Own Biopic

The film “Air,” which explores the origins of the Air Jordan sneaker line and the groundbreaking partnership between Nike and rookie Michael Jordan, is set for wide release in U.S. theaters on April 5.

Audiences will soon be able to watch stars like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, and Chris Tucker bring to life the story of how Jordan’s name became synonymous with one of the most recognizable brands worldwide.

Curiously, Michael Jordan himself is absent from the film.

Although the movie centers around his legacy, Jordan’s character doesn’t appear, which might seem unusual given the narrative. Ben Affleck, who directed and starred in the film with his frequent collaborator Matt Damon, offered insight into this creative choice during an interview at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas:

“Jordan isn’t portrayed in the film because his presence is too iconic, too overwhelming,” Affleck explained in a video shared by the Associated Press. “Trying to cast someone as Michael Jordan risks disconnecting the audience. When someone reaches that level of legendary status, there’s really no substitute.”

Additionally, Jordan has been occupied with other ventures, as an ESPN report recently revealed that the six-time NBA champion and five-time MVP is considering selling his majority ownership of the Charlotte Hornets, a franchise he has controlled since 2010.
