MX-5 Miata “Will Never Die,” Mazda Assures Enthusiasts

MX-5 Miata (Mazda)

Mazda’s commitment to the MX-5, affectionately known as the Miata, remains steadfast despite evolving automotive trends.

Disclosed as the Vision Study concept last November, sparking speculation about its ties to the next-generation Miata, Mazda’s CEO in Europe, Martijn ten Brink, assured enthusiasts that the MX-5 “will never die.”

Rear-Wheel Drive Commitment Reaffirmed by the Company (Mazda)

This declaration was made clear during the 2023 Brussels Motor Show, where ten Brink emphasized the MX-5’s permanent status in Mazda’s lineup.

Regarding the future of this beloved rear-wheel-drive convertible, ten Brink highlighted Mazda’s deliberations on integrating new technologies while preserving the purpose of what makes the MX-5 special.

He acknowledged that decisions on its next generation are ongoing but confirmed that the current ND model will continue to be available.

Despite its extended run, which could risk aging in other contexts, the MX-5 maintains appeal for its simplicity: naturally aspirated engines, rear-wheel drive dynamics, and renowned manual gearbox.

While affordability has been a hallmark of the MX-5, recent price increases reflect market trends. The prospect of hybridization for the next-generation (NE) MX-5 raises considerations of cost due to the complications of hybrid powertrains, potentially offering a solution to meet stringent Euro 7 emissions standards, as suggested by Mazda’s executive Yasuhiro Aoyama.

Although early sightings of NE Miata test mules surfaced in 2022, Mazda’s production timeline remains uncertain. The company reaffirms its commitment to retaining the rear-wheel-drive and internal combustion engine (ICE) combination for the fifth-generation MX-5.

While an electric MX-5 (possibly in the NF generation) is anticipated in the future, Mazda currently prioritizes preserving the MX-5’s core driving experience, ensuring that any future innovations complement rather than compromise its iconic status in the world of sports cars.
