Production at GM’s Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant, now dubbed Factory Zero, has commenced with the assembly lines buzzing as the highly anticipated GMC Hummer EV SUVs begin rolling off.

Duncan Aldred, GMC and Buick Global Vice President, officially announced the start of production during a recent GMC business roundtable.

The initial phase will proceed cautiously, with plans for a serious production ramp-up later in the year. Although specific on-sale dates and production targets weren’t disclosed, GMC faces the task of fulfilling 90,000 Hummer EV reservations, with approximately 50 to 60 percent earmarked for the pickup variant.

Aldred also addressed the potential expansion of the Hummer EV SUV into the Chinese market, noting that while exploration into this market is underway, no final decision has been made.

GM had previously showcased the Hummer EV SUV and Cadillac Celestiq at the China International Import Expo in November, signaling interest in introducing luxury EVs to Chinese consumers.

The discussion on the Hummer EV was part of a comprehensive overview of GMC’s 2022 business activities, highlighting the brand’s increased market share relative to competitors like Ford and Ram.

Beyond electric vehicle developments, GMC reported strong demand for the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition, set to hit the market later this year after debuting in July 2022.
