After a two-year break, the Toyota Land Cruiser makes its triumphant return for the 2024 model year. Senior editor Chris Perkins got an early look at the new Land Cruiser back in April, but I’ve had the chance to test out the base 1958 model for a week. I’m eager to evaluate its performance on and off the road.
The most affordable option in the Land Cruiser lineup is the 1958 model, which starts at $57,345, including destination charges. The vehicle I’m testing comes with no additional options, so its price remains unchanged. For 2025, Toyota has announced a slightly higher price of $57,900 for this model.
All variants of the Land Cruiser are equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and features standard full-time four-wheel drive with low-range gearing.
So far, I’ve had only a few days with the vehicle (and it had to spend some time in the garage due to Hurricane Milton), but I plan to take it off-road this weekend to assess its capability on challenging terrain. For now, I’ll share my initial impressions of the new Land Cruiser, highlighting what I appreciate and what I find lacking.
