International rights for “A Yard of Jackals” (“Patio de chacales”), a psychological thriller from Chilean writer-director Diego Figueroa, have been acquired by MPM Premium.
The film features renowned Chilean actors Néstor Cantillana and Blanca Lewin, whose on-screen chemistry was previously showcased in the HBO series “Fugitives” (“Prófugos”), directed by Pablo Larraín and Jonathan Jakubowicz.
Produced by Alejandro Ugarte at Infractor, based in Santiago, the film is positioned to enhance MPM Premium’s extensive collection of Latin American cinema. In collaboration with Chile’s Pejeperro Films and France’s Promenades Films, Infractor also co-produced the award-winning film “Perro Bomba.”
Ugarte expressed confidence in MPM Premium’s reputation for diverse and high-quality content, stating, “We believe that ‘A Yard of Jackals’ will enrich their portfolio, providing a unique cinematic experience for audiences worldwide.”
This film marks Figueroa’s feature debut, expanding on the narrative of his short film “Los Vecinos.” It follows Raúl, a mild-mannered man caring for his ailing mother while pursuing his passion for architectural models. However, when a group of threatening individuals moves into the neighborhood, Raúl’s mental state begins to deteriorate, revealing the complications of his psyche.
Quentin Worthington, head of sales and acquisitions at MPM Premium, shared his thoughts on the film: “Figueroa reinvigorates the crime and mystery thriller genre in Chilean cinema by spotlighting an everyday character with whom audiences can identify.
As Raúl confronts escalating terror, the film delves into a chilling truth that tests his humanity. We believe this gripping psychological thriller captures the aim of what it means to face pure terror, resonating with international viewers.”
At Sanfic Industria’s Works In Progress showcase, “A Yard of Jackals” garnered attention, winning awards and generating buzz before it participates in the IAFFM and Malaga’s Mafiz.
Figueroa expressed satisfaction with the film’s development, noting, “I believe it has evolved since the WIP stage.” He highlighted the importance of sound design, which includes an intense soundtrack that complements the narrative’s emotional weight. Additionally, he emphasized the visual identity of the film, enhanced through meticulous VFX and color correction work.
“The complex processes involved have yielded a stunning result that remains seamlessly integrated into the story. ‘A Yard of Jackals’ offers an immersive experience designed to attract viewers,” he added.
The film’s tension mirrors broader regional despair, set against the backdrop of 1978 and the looming Pinochet regime, which establishes a harsh tone without becoming the central focus.
Figueroa clarified, “My goal was not to provide a historical account of the dictatorship, but to evoke the horror and dread felt during my research for the story.” He explained that during the early dictatorship, there was little discussion about the revealing events, yet a palpable sense of danger pervaded everyday life. “I aim not to offer answers but to create a space for introspection among viewers,” he stated.
Figueroa’s portrayal of Raúl’s claustrophobic environment enhances the film’s intense familiarity. The unsettling depiction of the protagonist’s unraveling sanity provides a thought-provoking experience.
“My primary aim is to immerse the viewer in the protagonist’s mind, enabling them to experience the fiction as if they are living it,” he explained. “Cinema’s power lies not just in storytelling, but in allowing audiences to feel the story deeply.” He added, “The nature of space has always fascinated me; a wall alone does not create intimacy.
Even with modern technology, we often feel a constant paranoia, as though we are never truly alone. Although most of us may not share Raúl’s circumstances, we can all relate to the fear of unsafe spaces and the presence of unseen threats.”
The cast includes Grimanesa Jimenez, Consuelo Holzapfel, Maria Jesus Marcone, and Juan Cano, featuring voiceovers from Pablo Schwarz and Rodrigo Perez. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in Chile on January 23, distributed by Storyboard Media.
