A return to the racetrack might be on the horizon for Tom Cruise. Following the record-breaking success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” he is reportedly in the early stages of negotiations with Paramount for a sequel to “Days of Thunder,” his 1990 NASCAR drama.
This film, like the original “Top Gun,” was directed by the late Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, alongside his late partner Don Simpson. Currently, there are no additional creatives attached to the project, and with Cruise’s packed schedule—including promoting “Mission: Impossible 8,” filming Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming movie, and developing another “Top Gun” sequel—it seems this venture is still a way off from getting underway. A Paramount representative could not be reached for comment.
The original film tells the story of Cole Trickle, a spirited race car driver who joins a new NASCAR team led by a retired racing legend portrayed by Robert Duvall.
Cruise has a significant connection to this project, having earned his first and only official writing credit for helping to develop the story with screenwriter Robert Towne. Additionally, it was on this set that he met Nicole Kidman, who made her Hollywood debut as a neurosurgeon who falls in love with Cole, and with whom he was married for 11 years.
