The current WRX was introduced by Subaru without plans to release a high-performance STI version. Although the automaker has provided ambiguous insights regarding the future of the STI line, it hasn’t hindered the integration of its design elements into lower-tier models.
In New Zealand, Subaru is uncovering a special edition of the WRX that features a prominent rear wing, Recaro seats, and the signature WR Blue paint color, yet it does not bear the STI badge.
Named the WRX Todoroki, this model introduces a six-speed manual transmission to New Zealand for the first time. While the Todoroki includes various performance enhancements typically associated with the STI, it lacks the specific branding.
Performance features comprise six-piston front and two-piston rear Brembo brake calipers paired with ventilated and drilled discs. Subaru has also refined the car’s steering and suspension, enhancing the springs and dampers for improved handling. It is fitted with matte gray 19-inch wheels shod with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.
New Zealand enthusiasts interested in acquiring the Todoroki can now place pre-orders. Only 10 units are set to be produced, with prices starting at AUD$64,990 (approximately $43,951 at the current exchange rate).
Those fortunate enough to secure one will also receive a limited-edition STI watch as Subaru commemorates the 30th anniversary of the WRX. However, there remains no genuine WRX STI model from the manufacturer.
For U.S. consumers, the closest alternative is the WRX tS, which offers similar sporty enhancements. However, akin to the Todoroki, it does not represent a full-fledged STI.
The previous generation left the market boasting 341 horsepower, while the WRX tS features the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine found across the range, producing a respectable 271 horsepower. Nevertheless, it simply doesn’t compare to the STI legacy.
