Mick Foley is often associated with his hardcore matches and his endearing personality, but his legacy extends beyond those elements. Although he did capture the WWE World Championship, his reigns were brief, which gives him insight into the feeling of not being recognized as the top star.
During an appearance on “Monopoly Events” alongside Rikishi, Foley discussed how the importance of winning titles can be overstated and highlighted former WWE star Cesaro, who now competes as Claudio Castagnoli in AEW, as someone who deserved a chance at the World Championship.
Reflecting on his own title history, Foley noted, “I held the title three times for a total of 42 days — like I was the transitional champion. I’m glad I had it, but I don’t think I’d be thinking of my career as any lesser if I’d never held it.”
He expressed admiration for Cesaro, comparing him to classic wrestlers like Jack Brisco and Dory Funk, stating that Cesaro exemplified the qualities of a true traveling champion capable of delivering excellent matches with anyone.
Rikishi concurred, pointing out that many exceptional wrestlers, like Cesaro, have never had the opportunity to hold the World Championship despite their remarkable in-ring skills. He also cited The Undertaker as another example of a performer who thrived without necessarily needing the World Title, given the uniqueness of his character.
Since departing from WWE, Castagnoli has claimed the Ring of Honor World Championship, but some might argue that this title lacks the same level of prestige and reputation as WWE’s top accolade.
