Universal Pictures has released the trailer for Wicked: For Good, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2024 hit Wicked. The film continues the story adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway musical. The trailer opens with Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, calling out to Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) from a high tower in the Emerald City, setting the stage for the continuation of their magical, complicated journey.

Magic, Conflict, and Loyalty Deepen as Elphaba and Glinda Face Powerful New Threats

The trailer hints at escalating tension and deeper magical elements. Glimpses show Elphaba wielding her powers, Glinda donning a sparkling crown, and ominous flying monkeys suggesting new threats. Major characters return, including Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), both of whom are now actively hunting Elphaba, who has been labeled “The Wicked Witch.” Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), now a prince, is also recruited by Morrible to help capture her.

Despite the chaos, the bond between Elphaba and Glinda seems to endure. Their relationship, a central theme of the story, is emphasized in the trailer through emotional exchanges and musical performances. Grande and Erivo perform powerful numbers from the musical’s second act, including the titular song “For Good,” underscoring their characters’ unshakable connection.

A Nostalgic Journey That Bridges Wicked to the Classic Wizard of Oz Legacy

The trailer is rich with visual callbacks to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, reinforcing Wicked’s role as a narrative prequel. Scenes feature the Yellow Brick Road, glimpses of Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion. The trailer ends with Elphaba defiantly declaring, “I’m off to see the wizard,” a direct nod to the original film that ties the timelines together.

The original Wicked film shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation and earning 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture and acting nods for Grande and Erivo. It won awards for production and costume design. Riding this momentum, Wicked: For Good is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, with high expectations from both fans and critics alike.
