Fans of the magical world of Oz have reason to celebrate, as Wicked: For Good—the sequel to the blockbuster musical film Wicked—is set to hit theaters soon. The first trailer has premiered alongside a theatrical rerelease of the original, offering an emotional preview of the story’s continuation. This new film picks up where the Broadway show traditionally resumes after intermission, portraying a darker Oz where Elphaba is now in hiding, vilified by the Wizard and feared by the people.

Elphaba’s Resistance, Dorothy’s Arrival, and Familiar Faces Shape Wicked: For Good’s Story

The trailer reveals Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) living in exile and openly resisting the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) tracking her down. The powerful and emotional performance of “For Good” by Erivo and Ariana Grande (Glinda) anchors the trailer, along with a haunting rendition of “No Good Deed.” Adding intrigue, Dorothy Gale makes brief, enigmatic appearances alongside her classic companions—the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion—hinting that the events of The Wizard of Oz will have a stronger presence. However, her face is never shown, and casting remains unconfirmed.

Director Jon M. Chu made the creative decision to divide Wicked into two films, with Wicked: For Good continuing from where the first movie ended. Originally titled Wicked: Part Two, the sequel now bears the more emotionally resonant title referencing the show’s climactic song. All major cast members are set to return, including Grande as Glinda, Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, and Ethan Slater as Boq, maintaining continuity with the first installment.

New Songs and Deeper Character Arcs Add Emotional Depth to Wicked: For Good

Unlike the stage version, Wicked: For Good will include two brand-new songs—one each for Elphaba and Glinda. Erivo collaborated with composer Stephen Schwartz on her new number, describing it as emotionally powerful enough to move the entire film crew to tears during filming. At CinemaCon, both lead actresses teased deeper emotional arcs: Elphaba must grapple with using her powers for good while in exile, and Glinda undergoes a personal journey to redefine what it means to be “Glinda the Good.” Producer Marc Platt emphasized a richer, more profound portrayal of both characters.

Following the massive success of the original Wicked, which grossed over $750 million worldwide and won multiple Oscars, expectations are high for the sequel. The first movie set a high bar as the most successful Broadway-to-film adaptation in history. Wicked: For Good is set to continue this legacy when it debuts in theaters on November 21, 2025, almost exactly one year after its predecessor.
