The Batman 2 Production Starts Under Matt Reeves Despite Release Delay

Nobody enjoys hearing that a highly anticipated movie has been delayed, especially when it’s a major franchise sequel like The Batman 2.

Despite being pushed back by an entire year, director Matt Reeves remains optimistic about the next installment and recently shared an update on its progress.

Speaking on the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes, Reeves confirmed that, although The Batman 2 is now scheduled for release in 2027, Warner Bros. and DC are on track to begin filming later this year.

“I can tell you that we’re…shooting this year and that we’re excited about it. I can’t really tell you anything about it except that we’re really excited about it.”

While Reeves kept specific plot and character details under wraps, he did assure fans that the sequel’s story will continue from the events of the first movie.

This leaves room for endless speculation, though many fans will undoubtedly hope to see Barry Keoghan return as the Joker.

Reeves also teased the inclusion of both returning and new cast members in the sequel.

“I’m really excited to be making it and to get our cast back together and to get new people involved, and we’re really excited about it…We’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something that I hope people are gonna be really surprised by.”

In a separate interview, Reeves disclosed that the script for The Batman 2 is still in development. This was cited by James Gunn as the primary reason for the film’s delay from October 2026 to October 2027.

However, Gunn reassured fans that the extended gap between the two movies isn’t unusually long compared to other major sequels.

Meanwhile, in other corners of the Batman universe, Colin Farrell won a Golden Globe for his performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin.

The HBO series, however, lost out in the Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category to Netflix’s Baby Reindeer.
