Nearly three decades since the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998, new planning documents hint at a bold future for Walt Disney World in Florida. Recently released records from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) reveal that Disney is laying the groundwork for the development of a new “major theme park” and two “minor” parks, along with expanded resort amenities. While no specific projects have been confirmed yet, this signals a substantial push for growth at the Orlando resort.
Massive Expansion Plan Allows Flexible Development Over 2,600 Acres Through 2045 Timeline
The documents outline a development plan that encompasses 2,629 acres. Within this, a major theme park would span approximately 500 acres, and the two minor parks would each be about 300 acres. These sizes are larger than previous projections and reflect Disney’s intention to keep its options open. The proposal offers flexibility rather than commitments, allowing Disney to decide how best to utilize the space in the coming years.

This isn’t the first time Disney’s future expansion has made headlines. In July 2024, Disney reached an agreement with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the CFTOD to invest up to $17 billion in its Orlando operations. This agreement includes long-term plans for new parks, hotels, and entertainment options, with development scheduled to continue through 2045. However, fans hoping for immediate groundbreaking events may need to be patient, as the timeline stretches over the next two decades.
Confirmed Attractions Bring Beloved Characters and New Thrills to Disney World Parks
While the long-term plans are still taking shape, Disney has already confirmed several upcoming projects. At the 2024 D23 Disney Experiences showcase, it was announced that a Monsters Inc.-themed land will debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This addition will feature a groundbreaking suspended coaster that brings the movie’s door factory to life in ride form—an exciting first for Disney parks.
More exciting developments are on the horizon, including a Disney Villains Land at Magic Kingdom, complete with two attractions, themed dining, and shopping. Additionally, Disney Imagineers are transforming the Dino-Land U.S.A. section of Animal Kingdom into a Tropical Americas-themed area. These enhancements reflect Disney’s commitment to refreshing and diversifying guest experiences, ensuring that even as large-scale expansion looms, magical new experiences are never far away.
