Danny Ramirez has a deep personal connection to his role in Captain America: Brave New World.
The 32-year-old actor first stepped into the role of Joaquin Torres in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Now, with the release of the latest Marvel film on Friday, February 14, Ramirez’s character takes on a new identity, officially becoming the next Falcon.
“I’ve known since 2019, from the moment I got the job, that I was going to become Falcon,” he revealed to Men’s Health ahead of the film’s premiere.
“But then the doubts started creeping in. You never really know—will they kill you off for dramatic effect? Will they change the storyline? Now that I’ve finally taken on the mantle and can say it out loud—it feels incredible.”
In Marvel Comics, Torres is originally depicted as a Mexican immigrant who moves to Arizona. However, Ramirez’s portrayal in Brave New World takes on a more personal twist.
A notable scene in the movie features Torres sporting a University of Miami Hurricanes cutoff tank top (which, yes, highlights his biceps).
This theme continues throughout the film, with several Miami-related keepsakes appearing on Torres’ desk and the city being referenced multiple times, including during the final scene.
One key moment in the film sees Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (now Captain America) having a heartfelt conversation with Torres after a major battle.

Their emotional exchange is punctuated by several Miami-centric quips from Wilson to his new sidekick.
For Ramirez, these nods to Miami are more than just character details—they reflect his own upbringing. Though he was born in Chicago, he grew up in Miami, a fact well known to his Instagram followers, who have seen his passion for the city’s football team.
According to a 2023 interview with the University of Miami athletics department, his love for the Miami Hurricanes started at a young age.
How Danny Ramirez Brought His Miami Roots Into His Captain America Character
“I remember being in second grade, taking my shirt off, with this huge ‘U’ painted on my chest, going absolutely wild when the camera panned over,” he recalled.
“The chaperone scolded me, like, ‘What are you doing? Put your shirt back on. You’re just a little kid.’ But from that moment, I was hooked—I became a hardcore fan.”
Ramirez spoke further about his Miami pride during his SportsCenter appearance on Wednesday, February 12. “To me, they represent opportunity and the permission to be great,” he said of the Hurricanes.
Now, as he soars into his new role as the MCU’s Falcon, Ramirez’s journey in Captain America: Brave New World brings his character and personal history full circle. Captain America: Brave New World is currently playing in theaters.
