CBS Cancels FBI Spinoffs Despite High Ratings as New CIA Series Takes Their Place

CBS’ hit FBI franchise expanded with two spinoffs: FBI: Most Wanted launched in January 2020, followed by FBI: International in September 2021. Both shows ranked among the top 10 most-watched network primetime series in the 2024-2025 season. Despite their success, CBS announced in March 2025 that neither spinoff would return for the fall season, marking the end of both shows.

Financial Challenges Lead To Cancellation, While Cast Members Share Heartfelt Farewell Messages

The cancellations came after six seasons for FBI: Most Wanted and four for FBI: International. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach later explained that financial concerns were the primary reason behind the decision. The network needed to be “fiscally responsible,” and these shows were not economically viable to renew despite their popularity. Other CBS series like The Equalizer and S.W.A.T. also faced similar cancellations for budget reasons.

Cast members from both spinoffs expressed their sadness and gratitude following the news. FBI: International star Eva-Jane Willis reflected on the friendships and experiences gained during filming, while Vinessa Vidotto also shared appreciation for the show’s journey. Similarly, FBI: Most Wanted actors like Edwin Hodge and Keisha Castle-Hughes posted heartfelt goodbyes to their characters and crews, acknowledging the end of an important chapter in their careers.

Original FBI Continues Strong While CBS Launches New CIA Spinoff This Fall

Despite the spinoffs’ cancellation, the original FBI series remains on air. Its seventh season finale aired in May 2025, and the show has been renewed for three more seasons, extending to a tenth season. The flagship series will also change its weekly airing to Monday nights starting this fall, continuing to anchor the franchise’s success on CBS.

CBS is developing a new FBI-related spinoff titled CIA, set to premiere this fall. The show will feature Tom Ellis as a rule-breaking CIA agent paired with a disciplined FBI partner. This “odd couple” team will work together in the CIA’s New York Station to tackle national threats. FBI and CIA will air back-to-back on Monday nights, continuing CBS’s investment in the crime procedural franchise. Meanwhile, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International remain available to stream on Peacock and Paramount+.
