On Sunday, the United States clinched the title of the inaugural United Cup with an emphatic victory over Italy in the final held in Sydney, Australia.

Taylor Fritz, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, played a crucial role in the team’s success by securing the decisive win against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini with a gripping two-hour match that ended 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).

“It’s great. It’s amazing for the team to win this event”, Fritz (The United States Team)

As Berrettini’s forehand sailed long on championship point, the American team surged onto the court in celebration, reveling in their historic achievement.

Earlier in the final, Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe had both secured victories to give the US team an unassailable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five format. Madison Keys then added another win to the tally, defeating Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2, sealing the final score at 4-0.

Reflecting on the triumph, Fritz expressed his elation, saying, “It’s great. It’s amazing for the team to win this event. We came in with really high hopes, or at least I did, for the event.

I was really happy to be in that position to clinch the match.” The US team’s performance throughout the tournament was exceptional, finishing with a remarkable 22-2 record and demonstrating their dominance over the 18-nation field.

The United Cup, which featured round-robin matches across Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney, was a new addition to the tennis calendar this year, bringing together teams from around the world to compete in a fresh and exciting format.
