Suki Waterhouse Reveals Hernia Caused by Tight Pants, Shares Recovery Ahead of Tour Comeback

Actress and musician Suki Waterhouse recently revealed a personal health struggle to her followers on X (formerly Twitter). In a candid post, she explained that she’s been recovering from a hernia that developed after wearing extremely tight pants about six months ago. The “Daisy Jones & The Six” star, 33, jokingly addressed her social media absence, saying she was “too scared” to share the reason until now. The post included two photos—one of her performing in tight green pants, and another in a hospital bed.

Tight Clothing Can Cause Painful Hernias and Raise Health Concerns for Performers Onstage

Waterhouse’s condition was identified as an inguinal hernia, a medical issue where part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. According to the Mayo Clinic, this type of hernia can be painful, particularly during physical activity like coughing, bending, or lifting.

Though not uncommon, hernias can cause significant discomfort and require rest and sometimes surgery for recovery. Waterhouse’s story has drawn attention to the potential health risks of restrictive fashion choices, especially for performers who are constantly on stage.

Fans quickly responded to Waterhouse’s post with concern and curiosity. Many were surprised that something as simple as tight pants could lead to a medical emergency. Comments included expressions of support and well-wishes for her recovery. Despite the buzz, Waterhouse’s representatives did not respond to media inquiries about her health. Nonetheless, her honesty resonated with fans and added a human touch to her public persona.

Other Performers Also Face Hernias from Intense Stage Shows and Vocal Strain

Waterhouse is not alone in experiencing a hernia due to the physical demands of performing. Rock singer Sebastian Bach from Skid Row dealt with a similar condition in 2018, which he attributed to intense vocal performances. Bach underwent surgery and was sidelined for weeks, concerned it might impact his ability to sing.

He noted that other performers, including Rob Halford of Judas Priest, have also suffered hernias due to the pressure on the diaphragm from high-energy performances. The issue appears to be a recurring risk among singers who push their physical limits on stage.

Despite her recent health setback, Suki Waterhouse is preparing for her upcoming Sparklemuffin Tour, which kicks off in the UK next month. She will also be performing in the U.S. in September, indicating she’s on the road to full recovery. On the personal front, she and longtime partner Robert Pattinson got engaged in December 2023 and welcomed their daughter in March 2024. As she returns to the stage, Waterhouse continues to balance her flourishing career with her growing family.
