Suits Spin-off Show, How The Creators Plan To Retain The Original Theme

Suits creator Aaron Korsh has openly addressed fans’ concerns regarding the Suits LA spinoff and its impact on the legacy of the original series.

On Sunday, January 26, Korsh, 58, took to respond to viewers questioning whether Suits LA would “ruin” the beloved show.

“Not trying to replace our beloved originals. Just a new crew working in a different city handling different kinds of cases,” he clarified.

Expanding on his statement in a follow-up post, he added, “It seems like people are all wishing it was the originals back. I expected this and can’t blame them. I can only hope they give #SuitsLA an open-minded try. If they do, I really believe they will grow to love it.”

Korsh reassured fans that NBC’s Suits LA is “100% its own thing” but acknowledged that it “does have overlap” with the original series. Addressing speculation about Gabriel Macht reprising his role as Harvey Specter, Korsh left the door open for potential cameos from former Suits stars.

“The network very much wanted one original member. If you watch, you’ll see that from a story standpoint, Harvey made the most sense,” he explained. “[Suits LA is] its own thing, not a Suits spinoff.”

Regarding the possible return of Patrick J. Adams, Sarah Rafferty, or Meghan Markle, Korsh noted, “It remains to be seen.” While he is “open” to the idea, his main focus is “launching these characters on this show.”

Set in a fictional corporate law firm in New York City, the original Suits followed associate lawyer Mike Ross (Adams) as he worked with Harvey Specter while concealing the fact that he never attended law school.

Running from 2011 to 2019, the legal drama showcased Harvey and Mike’s teamwork in winning lawsuits and closing deals.

The show saw a major resurgence in popularity in 2023 when it was added to Netflix and Peacock. This renewed interest led NBC to develop Suits LA, featuring Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.

“We want to play the hits. We want to have a lot of fun,” Amell told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “We are only sitting in Black Lane Law Group conference room at the moment because of Gabriel and Patrick and Sarah and Meghan and Rick [Hoffman] and all of the people that comprised the original Suits cast. So all of them are welcome.”

Amell also hinted at a significant connection between his character and Harvey Specter.

“You’ll notice behind my desk that there’s a picture of a young Ted Black with what can only be a young Harvey Specter, so there’s clearly a history between the characters,” he teased.

“We came up together in the D.A.’s office. So if I was going to have anyone [from the original cast] come back, I would want it to be Gabriel.”

He continued, “I would really hope that that happens because I am very much a fan of his character, and I think that dynamic would be something viewers would really enjoy. … I’m not the one who invites [past actors for cameos], but as far as I’m concerned, all of them are welcome.

We’re going to do our own thing, and that’s OK. We do things on this show that they couldn’t do on the original.” Suits: LA premieres on NBC on February 23 at 9 p.m. ET.
