Rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was hospitalized following a violent attack at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where he is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. The assault took place around 7:20 a.m. on Monday in a housing unit at the facility.
Authorities did not initially disclose the specifics of the attack, but Lanez’s Instagram account later revealed that he had been stabbed 14 times, with injuries to his back, torso, head, and face. He also suffered two collapsed lungs, but the post indicated that Lanez was breathing on his own and in good spirits despite his injuries.
Lanez Attacked in Prison as Investigations Continue and Appeal of Megan Shooting Conviction
Upon being attacked, Lanez received immediate medical aid from prison staff, who promptly contacted emergency services. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The Kern County District Attorney’s Office and the prison’s investigative unit have opened an investigation into the incident. The prison, located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, houses both medium- and maximum-security inmates. Lanez’s attackers remain unidentified, and further details surrounding the motive for the assault have yet to emerge.

In December 2022, Lanez was convicted on multiple charges related to the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. The charges included assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Megan had testified during the trial that Lanez shot at her feet after a party at Kylie Jenner’s home in July 2020, injuring her with bullet fragments. Lanez’s legal team is currently appealing the conviction, and a judge recently rejected a motion for a new trial. They have not commented on the attack at the prison.
Megan Thee Stallion’s Legal Battles and Career Success Amidst Controversial Lanez Case
Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, has publicly accused Lanez of harassing her from prison through surrogates, prompting a judge to issue a protective order against him, effective until 2030. Despite the ongoing legal battles, Megan’s career has continued to thrive. Since the shooting, she has won Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist in 2021, and had major hits like “Savage” and “WAP.” The trial and its aftermath have ignited discussions about issues such as gender politics, misogynoir, and the challenges faced by Black women in the music industry.
The case has sparked significant controversy within the hip-hop community, with supporters of Lanez claiming that he was unfairly treated by the justice system. His father, Sonstar Peterson, caused a scene in the courtroom when the verdict was announced, denouncing prosecutors and the justice system, leading to his removal from the courtroom.
His actions reflected the intense emotions surrounding the case, with many believing that Lanez was being victimized. Despite this, the case has highlighted important conversations about race, gender, and power dynamics within the music industry and beyond.
