Borderlands 4 Moves Up to September, but Switch 2 Release Still Shrouded in Uncertainty

Nintendo Switch users have long been irked by vague release timelines, especially when third-party developers announce firm dates for other platforms while offering only a non-specific “coming soon on Switch.” This pattern creates uncertainty and disappointment among fans eager to play new titles alongside other platform users. The concern is that a similar situation may now be unfolding with the upcoming release of Borderlands 4.

Switch 2 Release Unclear as 2K Strategically Reschedules Borderlands 4 Launch

Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford recently announced that Borderlands 4 will now launch on 12th September 2025, earlier than the previously planned 23rd September date. This acceleration of the release has been attributed to the smooth progress of the game’s development. However, Pitchford did not clarify whether this new date applies to the Nintendo Switch 2 version, leading to more questions than answers.

When Borderlands 4 was announced for the Switch 2 during a recent Nintendo Direct, no release date was specified. Instead, it was vaguely stated that the game would arrive “in 2025.” The ambiguity has left fans wondering if the Switch 2 version will launch simultaneously with other platforms or face a delay. So far, there has been no confirmation either way, prompting some outlets to seek clarification directly from Gearbox.

Switch 2 Release Unclear as 2K Strategically Reschedules Borderlands 4 Launch

Pitchford posted a video update confirming the new release date, but the omission of specific Switch 2 details leaves room for speculation. If the Switch 2 version is indeed included in the September 12 launch, that would be a welcome change. However, if it remains undated, it continues a frustrating trend of lackluster communication around Nintendo platform releases.

While Pitchford attributes the early launch to successful development progress, some believe there may be a strategic motive at play. Publisher 2K is also responsible for Grand Theft Auto 6, another blockbuster title due out in 2025. It stands to reason that the company would prefer to stagger the launches of its major games to avoid internal competition, potentially explaining the new date for Borderlands 4.
