Coralie Fargeat, the director of The Substance, has confirmed that there will be no sequels or prequels to the body horror film.
The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, has been met with critical acclaim from both reviewers and audiences. Additionally, the film won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in May of the previous year.
The plot centers around Moore’s character, Elisabeth Sparkle, a fitness TV show host who faces the harsh realities of aging in the entertainment industry.
After being fired from her show, Elisabeth turns to a mysterious drug that transforms her into a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. However, Elisabeth must alternate between her younger and older selves every week, or face dire consequences.
When asked about the possibility of a sequel, Fargeat responded, “No, the point of this movie is to present fresh things to the world. Like, no sequels, no prequels, no number two [or] number three. So, I’m going to be still happy to bring something fresh to the world in a bit.”
Both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley have been nominated for Golden Globe awards for their roles in The Substance. Moore received a nomination for Best Actress, while Qualley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
