History

The occasion honors the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, a legendary hockey player born in 1905 in a Rajput family from Allahabad. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dhyan Chand joined the Army, where he developed a passion for hockey.

Renowned for his extraordinary skill, Dhyan Chand was instrumental in leading the Indian hockey team to gold medals at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. Over a distinguished 22-year career, he scored over 400 goals.

In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Dhyan Chand played a pivotal role by scoring three goals in the final, contributing to an 8-1 victory over Germany. This match epitomized India’s hockey success during Dhyan Chand’s era.

Even after retiring, Dhyan Chand continued to contribute to the sport by coaching at various camps in Rajasthan and serving as the head coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.
