Naomi Osaka’s Major Milestone: Top 10 Win and Progression to US Open Round Two

Naomi Osaka (WTA)

On Tuesday, Naomi Osaka achieved a milestone by securing her first victory over a top-10 player in over four years, triumphing 6-3, 6-2 against Jelena Ostapenko in the US Open’s opening round. Osaka’s performance was as striking as the oversized green bow adorning her outfit, as she overwhelmed the No. 10 seed with a series of powerful serves.

Currently ranked No. 88 globally, Osaka showcased some of her finest tennis since her return from maternity leave earlier this year. She delivered over 19 winners, including nine aces, and committed only five unforced errors, marking a remarkable comeback.

her on-court interview, Osaka shared an emotional moment, reflecting on her journey and expressing how much it meant to return to this level of competition. She recalled watching Coco Gauff last year and yearning to return to the court, uncertain about her physical and athletic abilities.

“This win and being back in this atmosphere is incredibly meaningful,” Osaka said, fighting back tears. Her return to tennis in 2024 has been highlighted by achievements, including a win in her season debut, a first Wimbledon victory since 2018, and a quarterfinal appearance at a WTA 1000 event.

Despite her success, Osaka has been candid about the challenges of coming back after childbirth. In a recent Instagram post, she admitted struggling with her form and adjusting to her body changes. As she prepares for her second-round match against 2023 semifinalist Karolína Muchová, Osaka plans to stay focused, enjoy the game, and cherish precious moments with her daughter.

Osaka also embraced a more vibrant and extravagant style for the US Open, including green bows on her sneakers and a bold outfit. She noted the unique energy of her New York attire, reflecting, “I hope it’s not too over the top, but I’m ready to fully embrace this maximalist style.”
