NFL Roster Cuts: Key Free Agents the Patriots Could Sign

The Patriots face a pressing need to bolster their offensive line, with limited options available in free agency and on the waiver wire

The New England Patriots have finalized their 53-man roster, though further adjustments are expected before the start of the NFL regular season. Currently, the Patriots face a pressing need for bolstering their offensive line. Unfortunately, available options in free agency and on the waiver wire are limited, even after a flurry of player releases in recent days, reflecting the high demand for quality offensive linemen.

One potential target for the Patriots is offensive tackle Geron Christian, recently cut by the Tennessee Titans. Christian, who has experience as a starter for the Cleveland Browns and briefly with the Titans, might be a valuable addition. He played under current Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and offensive line coach Scott Peters in Cleveland. Since beginning his career in 2018, Christian has participated in 58 games, starting 25.

In terms of wide receivers, the Patriots have chosen to retain seven, contrary to many experts’ predictions of six. While the team has solid depth at this position, free-agent options remain. Tim Patrick, who missed the past two seasons due to ACL and Achilles injuries, is now back to full health. His last full season in 2021 saw him accumulate 53 receptions for 734 yards and five touchdowns. He participated in two of the Broncos’ preseason games this year.

Another intriguing possibility is Donovan Peoples-Jones, a 25-year-old receiver recently released by the Detroit Lions. Peoples-Jones had a strong performance in 2022 under Van Pelt’s guidance, with 61 catches for 839 yards and three touchdowns. His familiarity with Van Pelt could be advantageous for the Patriots as they seek to enhance their receiving corps.
