Tracking new movie releases can be challenging, especially with the recent disruptions caused by Hollywood strikes and subsequent schedule changes. Now that the WGA and actors’ strikes have ended, August is seeing a resurgence of both high-profile and independent films.
On August 16, the horror franchise “Alien” returns with “Alien: Romulus,” a fresh installment featuring a new cast, including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Isabela Merced. This reboot follows a team of young scavengers encountering a terrifying extraterrestrial threat during a deep space salvage operation.
Also debuting on the same day is “Skincare,” a thriller centered on a renowned aesthetician whose flourishing business is threatened by sabotage from a rival boutique opening nearby. The film stars Elizabeth Banks, Lewis Pullman, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.
Additionally, two films are having limited releases this week: “Close to You,” a drama exploring the journey of a transgender man revisiting his hometown after a long absence, and “The Greatest Surf Movie in the Universe,” an animated comedy about a life-saving vaccine that erases the world’s memory of surfing.
