Ángel Salazar, renowned for his role as Chi Chi in Scarface, passed away on August 11, as confirmed by his representative Roger Paul. He was 68 years old.

In the 1983 classic film, Salazar’s character Chi Chi is a key figure alongside drug lord Tony Montana, portrayed by Al Pacino, as they pass the dangerous world of Miami’s cocaine trade. Salazar’s Chi Chi plays a crucial role in the iconic chainsaw scene, saving Tony from a deadly confrontation with rival gang leader Hector, played by Al Israel.

As the film nears its climax, Chi Chi attempts to defend Tony from Alejandro Sosa’s hit men using a submachine gun. Chi Chi is finally the last member of Tony’s crew to be killed, leaving Tony isolated.

Salazar began his career performing in New York City comedy clubs after emigrating from Cuba. His filmography includes roles in Punchline (1988) with Tom Hanks, Carlito’s Way alongside Pacino, Boulevard Nights (1979), and Sylvester (1985).

On television, Salazar appeared in In Living Color, On Our Own, and Jersey Mafia Chronicles. He continued performing stand-up comedy until July 2024. Salazar was also featured in the 2006 documentary The Latin Legends of Comedy and appeared on the reality show Last Comic Standing.
