Cronos Films & Production from the Dominican Republic has secured its first pre-sales agreement for “Beyond the Mist” (“Después de la Niebla”), marking an outstanding step in their venture into “sensory cinema” that addresses the social and political issues of the Dominican Republic.
Latin Quarter, a sales-distribution company based in The Hague, has finalized an all-rights deal for the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg during the Locarno Match Me! networking event. This deal represents the first distribution agreement for the film.
Latin Quarter, known for its growing influence in the Latin American and Spanish-language film markets, operates directly in the Netherlands, as well as the U.K., Germany, and Spain.
They are exploring further collaboration on the film, as director Juan G. Castro revealed. Nidsbelle Guzmán, who will co-direct “Beyond the Mist” with Andrea Tudela (“Dueños del Tiempo”) and produce alongside Homer Mora, noted that Match Me! is facilitating productive discussions with potential European and Latin American co-producers.
Written by Guzmán and Emmanuel Galán (“Motel,” “Atravesando el Jordán”), “Beyond the Mist” follows David, who struggles with his grandmother’s death. His interactions with visiting friends and a subsequent emotional crisis lead him to confront his deepest grief in the forest. Erlyn Saul, Omar Patín, and Lia Chapman are cast in the film, which is set to shoot between December 2025 and January 2026.
Guzmán highlighted that the film’s uniqueness lies in its “sensory cinema” approach, with production design focusing on symbolic uses of water and original music with secured rights.
Pablo Vásquez (“Bésame Tonto,” “11-11 En mi cuadra nada cuadra”) has joined the screenwriting team. Guzmán noted that Vásquez, who has extensive experience in television and film, was drawn to the project due to personal experiences of loss, making his perspective particularly valuable.
Guzmán concluded that while integrating international talents presents challenges, the overall experience has been positive and enriching.
