Consultation with Kerr and Matildas Planned for Upcoming Coach Search

Football Australia is set to involve Matildas players, including injured captain Sam Kerr, in the search for the team’s next coach. With Tony Gustavsson’s departure now two weeks past, the FA has initiated the process to appoint a new leader for the upcoming cycle, which includes the 2026 Asian Cup, the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and the 2028 Olympics.

Real Madrid recently delivered a standout performance at Camp Nou, defeating FC Barcelona 3-1 in the Spanish Supercup. Although Cristiano Ronaldo’s 80th-minute goal had given Real a 2-1 lead, Marco Asensio’s strike just before the final whistle secured the victory.

James Johnson, FA chief executive, emphasized the importance of player involvement in the coaching selection process. “Understanding the players’ perspectives on what worked and what didn’t is crucial,” Johnson said. He noted that while players’ input is vital, the final decision will rest with the FA to ensure the best choice for the team’s future.

Although there’s no set deadline, the FA aims to appoint Gustavsson’s successor within the next few months. Potential candidates include former San Diego Wave coach Casey Stoney and Sydney FC’s Ante Juric, while Joe Montemurro, recently appointed at Lyon, is unlikely to be considered.

Kerr’s return will be pivotal, and Johnson confirmed that she will be included in consultations despite her ACL injury. “Sam is a once-in-a-lifetime athlete, and we are eagerly awaiting her return,” he said.

Johnson also defended the Matildas following criticism after their disappointing Olympic performance, asserting their professionalism and growth mindset as they prepare for future challenges.
