Martin Zubimendi Settles Transfer Speculation with Final Answer After Liverpool Interest

Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

Earlier this summer, Martin Zubimendi had indicated his preference to stay at Real Sociedad, despite interest from clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona. However, recent reports revealed that Liverpool had intensified their efforts to persuade the 25-year-old to leave San Sebastián.

Real Sociedad had made it clear that they would only consider parting with Zubimendi if his €60 million (£51.7 million) release clause was met. Liverpool seemed to be moving forward with their pursuit, given Zubimendi’s initial openness to the transfer.

Yet, it has now emerged that Zubimendi has had second thoughts about joining Arne Slot’s team. According to The Athletic, the midfielder has opted to remain at Real Sociedad, dashing Liverpool’s hopes of acquiring the Euro 2024 winner.

Having been with Real Sociedad since the age of 12, Zubimendi has accumulated 188 competitive appearances, contributing eight goals and seven assists. With his future now settled, he is expected to feature when Real Sociedad kick off their La Liga campaign against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

This decision is a setback for Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, who has yet to make his first signing since joining the club earlier this summer. Hughes will now need to shift his attention to other targets, as Liverpool seeks to strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes.

The Reds have been linked with French international Adrien Rabiot, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus. Additionally, Liverpool is considering a move for Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup, with the 23-year-old potentially being an option to bolster their squad.
