Korda Captures Washington Open, Mirroring Father’s Success 32 Years On

Sebastian Korda (USA/ATP)

On Sunday, the 24-year-old secured his second career title by defeating Flavio Cobolli 4-6 6-2 6-0. Petr Korda, Sebastian’s father, claimed the same title in 1992, making them the first father and son duo to achieve this feat in ATP Tour history.

Korda’s win over Cobolli boosts him to a career-high world number 18 (USA/ATP)

Reflecting on the victory, Korda remarked, “Our family has a deep connection to this tournament. One of my major goals was to come here one day, win the tournament, and have my name displayed on the stadium.”

He added, “This moment is likely the most special of my career to date.”

Radek Stepanek, who now coaches Korda and was once coached by Petr Korda, previously won the Washington Open in 2011.

This triumph against Cobolli will propel Korda to a career-high ranking of world number 18.

In other news, Paula Badosa, a former world number two, clinched her first title in over two years by overcoming Marie Bouzkova 6-1 4-6 6-4.

The 26-year-old had dropped out of the top 100 in 2023 due to a stress fracture in her back.

Badosa’s win against Bouzkova will see her return to the top 50, having received a wildcard entry to Washington.

She expressed, “Considering what I went through last year, winning a major title and competing against top players again is incredibly meaningful.”

Badosa concluded, “A year ago, I was on the couch, so this is a huge difference. Now, I’m back as an athlete.”
