Kaufman, a prominent comedian of the 1970s and 1980s, gained fame through his role in the TV show “Taxi,” which aired from 1978 to 1983.

The rivalry intensified when Lawler delivered a piledriver to Kaufman, leading to a memorable appearance on David Letterman’s NBC Late Night show, where Lawler slapped Kaufman.
