The Mercedes-Benz CLA-class, which has been the brand’s entry-level sedan in the U.S., is soon to be replaced. The current model comes with a standard powertrain featuring a 221-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (302 hp in the CLA 35 and 416 hp in the CLA 45), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations.
However, the upcoming third-generation version will introduce an electric vehicle (EV) option to the lineup. The EV version is expected to incorporate technology from the EQXX concept, including a two-speed transmission, similar to what is used in the Porsche Taycan. The EQXX concept featured a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 241 horsepower, along with EV panels on the roof.
The production model will be available in both single-motor and dual-motor configurations, utilizing Mercedes’ new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture). It will also come with two different types of lithium-ion batteries, each with distinct chemistry, and will feature an 800-volt architecture. The top-tier version of the CLA EV could potentially achieve a range of up to 400 miles.
While Mercedes claims that the combustion engine in the new model is newly developed, it will still incorporate a 48-volt hybrid assist system, much like the current turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Further details about the engine were not disclosed.
Drawing inspiration from the Concept CLA-class EV revealed last year, the production model will feature distinctive design elements such as lighting integrated into the exterior. Its headlights will incorporate a three-pointed star, a feature that will carry over into the production version. The video also highlights frameless door glass and a panoramic glass roof, while the next-generation “Hey, Mercedes” MB.OS virtual assistant will use artificial intelligence.
