Embarrassing Prime-Time Loss Highlights Colts’ Struggles with “Win Now” Offense

On Sunday night, the Indianapolis Colts showcased their new “win-now” offense after deciding to bench second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson. This choice came after only 10 career starts for Richardson, as head coach Shane Steichen stated that veteran Joe Flacco offers the Colts “the best chance to win” moving forward.

Given what Steichen and the Colts displayed on the field, it seems unlikely that this will lead to many victories in the second half of the season.

Head coach Shane Steichen believes Flacco provides the best chance for Colts’ success (Indianapolis Colts)

In their 21-13 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings, the Colts’ offense was far from impressive. Flacco appeared immobile in the pocket, completing 16 of 27 passes for 179 yards with no touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 63.7.

The offense failed to score a touchdown and did not register a single snap in the red zone. While the defense showed a commendable effort to keep the game competitive, the offense did not deliver as expected.

Their total of 227 yards was the lowest of the season and the second-lowest during Steichen’s time as head coach. The offense also recorded an average of -0.35 expected points added (EPA) per play, marking its worst performance of the year.

This display resembled the lackluster and chaotic unit that took the field in 2022, characterized by no sustained drives, a complete absence of explosive plays, and a lack of consistency. There was no threat posed in either aspect of the game.

At least Flacco managed to complete 59% of his passes, right?

Moving forward, the Colts will regroup with Flacco as the starter and prepare to face the Buffalo Bills (7-2) at home, aiming to stay in the hunt for an AFC playoff
