On Saturday, Arsenal’s title hopes faced a serious setback as Newcastle emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, allowing Manchester City the opportunity to extend their lead over the Gunners to eight points at the top of the Premier League.
The decisive goal came from Alexander Isak in the 12th minute, who deftly headed in a precise cross from Anthony Gordon on the right. Despite controlling possession, Arsenal struggled to create chances, managing only one shot on target throughout the match.
As a result, Mikel Arteta’s squad has managed to earn just one point in their last three matches, signaling a rapid decline in their title challenge. Should the defending champions City secure a victory against Bournemouth later on Saturday, they will indeed establish an eight-point cushion over Arsenal. Liverpool, sitting a point behind City, are set to host Brighton at Anfield.
In recent seasons, Arsenal has consistently challenged Pep Guardiola’s City, appearing well-prepared for another title run. However, the current point gap is becoming increasingly concerning. The injury-stricken visitors began the match energetically, with Leandro Trossard sending an early effort wide of the target.
However, Newcastle, seeking to break a five-match winless streak, quickly found their footing. Isak outmaneuvered both Gabriel and William Saliba to head in Gordon’s superb cross. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, though active, struggled to make an impact but nearly connected in the 18th minute, heading just off-target after rising above his defender.
A moment of tension for Newcastle arose when Lewis Hall cleared Mikel Merino’s shot off the line after a chaotic corner from Declan Rice, but the visitors could not find their rhythm and failed to match the home side’s intensity.
Arteta refrained from making any changes at halftime, and Newcastle nearly extended their lead shortly after, with David Raya saving a shot from Joe Willock. In an effort to shift momentum, Arteta introduced 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri and Oleksandr Zinchenko for Gabriel Martinelli and Merino just after the hour mark.
Isak tested Raya again with a shot that the Arsenal keeper deflected, while Rice made a strong run into the Newcastle box, only to send his shot wide. Desperate for an equalizer, Arteta made additional substitutions, bringing on defender Ben White and forward Gabriel Jesus.
As time ran out, Arsenal struggled to gain momentum and missed a crucial opportunity to level the match when Rice headed a Saka cross just wide during stoppage time. Missing their captain, Martin Odegaard, the Gunners recently experienced a surprising defeat to Bournemouth and settled for a draw with Liverpool last week.
Upcoming challenges loom large, with matches against Inter Milan in the Champions League and Chelsea next week. With this win, Newcastle climbs to eighth in the league table as they await the results of the later matches on Saturday.
