RN24 Takes the Spotlight at N Day 2024 as Hyundai N Previews Next-Gen Electric Performance

Hyundai N's RN24 debuts as an experimental ‘Rolling Lab’ concept at the N Day 2024 event (Hyundai)

At Hyundai’s ‘N Day 2024’ event, the high-performance N division introduced the RN24, a next-generation ‘Rolling Lab’ designed to explore future advancements in electric vehicle (EV) performance. Each year, ‘N Day’ serves as a platform to showcase Hyundai N’s commitment to motorsport-level innovation in EV technology.

The brand focuses on three core principles: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar. These pillars embody the company’s mission to develop EVs that are not only practical but also exhilarating to drive.

As part of the Rolling Lab series, RN24 builds on Hyundai N’s tradition of blending motorsport innovations with production models. This concept originated with the RM (Racing Midship) series in 2012 and evolved to include electric models like the RN22e and N Vision 74. Rolling Labs act as experimental platforms where new high-performance technologies are tested for future consumer applications.

Continuing this experimental legacy, RN24 pushes the limits of motorsport technology to redefine what electrified vehicles can achieve under the N brand. The debut of RN24 introduces an EV engineered for enthusiasts, featuring the 650 PS dual-motor power system from the IONIQ 5 N.

This setup was integrated into a World Rally Championship-inspired compact chassis, prioritizing agility and lightweight design. Hyundai N’s goal was to deliver the most powerful EV technology in a smaller, more manageable package.

More than just a concept car, RN24 opens the door to new possibilities for high-performance EVs. Hyundai N’s approach isn’t solely about boosting speed or power—it emphasizes precision, drivability, and the overall driving experience.

Built on the E-GMP platform from the IONIQ 5 N, RN24 retains an 84 kWh battery but features a shorter wheelbase, shrinking it to B-segment proportions. This adjustment places the vehicle on par with the i20 N Rally1 Hybrid from the World Rally Championship (WRC).

The chassis incorporates WRC-style suspension with rally-grade dampers and high-rigidity subframes. Designed for both performance and durability, the system provides drivers with handling capabilities suited for motorsport conditions.

RN24 is also equipped with advanced WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic, giving drivers the ability to adjust power levels, acceleration sensitivity, regenerative braking, and motor power distribution directly from the steering wheel.

These features mimic the driving controls found in Hyundai’s WRC competitors. Enhanced cooling systems and a faster steering response further improve the vehicle’s agility, aligning it with the dynamics of rally racing.

An external sound system enhances the vehicle’s auditory appeal, featuring side-mounted speakers and IONIQ 5 N’s N Active Sound+ technology. A rear fender designed as a soundbox amplifies the performance soundscape, creating a thrilling experience for fans and drivers alike.

One standout feature is the ‘Rally Mode,’ which mirrors the torque distribution of the i20 N Rally1’s mechanical system. By optimizing motor torque control electronically, this innovation provides similar performance benefits while reducing complexity and production costs for future consumer models.

Another WRC-inspired innovation is the e-Handbrake, developed to replace traditional braking systems used for specific rally maneuvers. This system eliminates unnecessary components, such as preheating mechanisms and hydraulic brakes, streamlining the vehicle’s overall design. Hyundai recently tested this feature on the Central European Rally stage.

Visually, RN24 boasts a distinctive exoskeleton-style roll cage inspired by rally cars, ensuring both safety and structural stability during high-speed maneuvers. The vehicle’s performance is further enhanced with 19-inch matte black forged wheels from the Elantra N, adding both style and functional value.

To boost aerodynamics, the RN24 is outfitted with a spoiler borrowed from Hyundai’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models. This spoiler improves stability and cornering at high speeds. Additionally, 3D-printed gussets integrated into the chassis increase rigidity while minimizing weight.

With this combination of advanced technologies, RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s philosophy of pushing boundaries in electric motorsport. The innovations introduced through this Rolling Lab underscore Hyundai’s dedication to redefining the driving experience and setting new standards in EV performance.
