The New England Patriots are moving forward with their rebuilding efforts, as head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that rookie quarterback Drake Maye will make his NFL debut as a starter in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.

Initially, Maye started the 2024 season as a backup to Jacoby Brissett, but now he has the opportunity to demonstrate why he was chosen with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Although the 22-year-old had limited playing time during the preseason and only appeared briefly in a Week 3 loss to the New York Jets, he showcased glimpses of the potential that made him an intriguing prospect.

With the Patriots’ passing game struggling this season, Maye’s promotion to starter could inject some much-needed motivation into the team. On a positive note for New England, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is expected to be available to support Maye in his debut.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz on X, “Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne plans to play Sunday vs the Texans. Bourne (knee) is listed as questionable for Drake Maye’s first career start.”

Bourne missed the first four games of the season while recovering from an ACL tear sustained last year, but he made his season debut in the Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins without any issues.

Though he only played 16 snaps upon his return, he is likely to see increased action against Houston, enhancing Maye’s chances for success. Throughout his career, Bourne has proven to be a dependable target in the passing game, and he could contribute during Maye’s inaugural start.
