Phoenix had a disappointing showing in the 2023-24 NBA season, failing to live up to the high expectations set for them. Considered strong contenders for the title after acquiring Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, the Suns ended up being swept in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Following that dismal exit, the team decided to shake things up, parting ways with Frank Vogel and appointing Mike Budenholzer as the new head coach. Budenholzer, who took a break from coaching after leaving the Milwaukee Bucks, now has an opportunity to revitalize Phoenix and push them toward championship contention.
As the Western Conference appears more competitive this season, Budenholzer faces the challenge of optimizing the Suns’ current roster. Jusuf Nurkic, set to be the starting center, is expected to play a pivotal role, with Budenholzer sharing his vision for Nurkic’s development, as reported by Evan Sidery of Forbes.
According to Sidery, Budenholzer aims to expand Nurkic’s role by encouraging him to take more 3-point shots, having worked in the offseason on enhancing his ability to space the floor. If Nurkic can effectively stretch the defense, it could unlock more opportunities for Phoenix’s star players to operate.
The idea of Nurkic becoming a reliable shooter from deep could greatly improve the team’s offensive flow, and it seems Budenholzer is committed to making that happen. While Nurkic has shown potential from beyond the arc, this season could see him taking on that responsibility more frequently.
