Hailing from New Jersey, Karl-Anthony Towns attended college in Kentucky and has dedicated his entire NBA career to the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, his heritage traces back to the Dominican Republic, which he honors through his latest initiative.
On Thursday, Towns announced plans to construct a cutting-edge basketball training facility in the Dominican Republic, aimed at providing children with exceptional coaching, physical therapy, and essential classroom and meeting spaces.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for next year in Santiago, Dominican Republic, with an expected completion date in 2026.
Reflecting on his journey, Towns, a four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection entering his 10th professional season, expressed, “I’ve been very fortunate to live the American dream.
However, I want to share the resources we have here with the kids back home, giving them the best equipment and opportunities to not only support their families but also pursue their dreams.” He recognizes the impact of his mother’s experiences in shaping his perspective.
Jacqueline Cruz-Towns passed away in April 2020 due to complications from COVID-19, leaving a profound legacy in her son’s life.
She instilled in him the values of faith, family, and hard work. Towns’ decision to collaborate with GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs for the facility is a tribute to her influence and roots.
Expressing gratitude for the Dominican Republic, Towns remarked, “It was really important for me to give back to my community, a country that has given me everything, including my mother and my love for basketball.” He emphasized how this endeavor embodies the aim of love, family, and respect for others.
In honor of his late mother, Towns has also represented the Dominican Republic in various international tournaments since 2011, most recently excelling at the 2023 World Cup in the Philippines, where he averaged 24.4 points over five games.
The basketball facility will be part of a larger complex featuring two soccer fields, four baseball fields, covered outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, and an educational center.
Towns noted the importance of finding trustworthy individuals to implement the programs on-site, stating that the “building blocks are set” for this ambitious project.
He believes his mother would be proud of this initiative, which aims to provide a sanctuary for children facing adversity and lacking resources. “It is a safe haven for some of these kids who find themselves in difficult situations,” Towns explained.
“This gives them a chance to dream, whether or not they make it to the NBA, WNBA, or become professional athletes. It helps them develop life skills, social skills, and the passion and dedication needed to pursue their aspirations.”
