Volkswagen Presents the Latest Multivan eHybrid 4Motion: A Hybrid with 4WD

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has introduced several updates at IAA Transportation 2024, with the spotlight on the new Transporter and Caravelle. However, exciting advancements can also be seen across other models, such as the Multivan and ID.Buzz.

For the first time, the Multivan now comes as a plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive. This new version, the Multivan eHybrid 4Motion, is the first from Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix to offer such a system.

With a 245 PS plug-in hybrid setup, the eHybrid 4Motion temporarily becomes a fully electric vehicle suitable for daily use, boasting a 19.7 kWh battery that allows for long-range electric driving.

Volkswagen has also introduced the second generation of the plug-in hybrid system in this model, delivering better efficiency for extended journeys between charges. The powertrain pairs an electric motor with a turbocharged 1.5 TSI evo2 petrol engine, which features a VTG charger, optimizing performance.

Moreover, the ID. Buzz lineup has been expanded both up and down the range. Alongside the 286 PS Pro models with a normal wheelbase (NWB) and a 79 kWh battery, buyers can now choose the 286 PS ID.

Buzz with a long wheelbase (LWB) and a larger 86 kWh battery, offering a maximum range of 303 miles. The lineup also includes two 340 PS GTX versions with all-wheel drive, with ranges of up to 263 miles (NWB) and 295 miles (LWB).

Another addition is the ID. Buzz Cargo 4MOTION, featuring all-wheel drive and a 79 kWh battery. This new model enhances towing capacity, increasing it from 1,200 kg to 1,800 kg on a 12% gradient. It offers a range of up to 268 miles, making it a practical choice for commercial use.

For those seeking more budget-friendly options, Volkswagen has added models like the ID. Buzz Pure, ID. Buzz Freestyle, and ID. Buzz Pure Cargo, all powered by a 170 PS motor with a 59 kWh battery. The ID. Buzz Cargo Pure starts at €42,710 in Germany, and an electric refrigerated version, created by German body manufacturer Wükaro, will also be showcased.

Volkswagen has revamped the Crafter model as well, featuring an upgraded cockpit and a new generation of infotainment. The latest version includes a visually free-standing display as part of the standard “Composition” infotainment system, while the “Discover Media” navigation system is available as an upgrade. The Crafter can also be equipped with the “Discover Pro” navigation system, featuring a larger 32 cm (12.9 inches) display.

New to the Crafter is the “Digital Cockpit Pro,” which introduces digital instruments as a standard feature. Other additions include an electronic parking brake with auto-hold function, as well as more advanced assistance systems. For the first time, “Travel Assist,” which provides both longitudinal and lateral guidance, is available as an optional upgrade.

Under the hood, the Crafter offers a selection of 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines with 140 PS, 163 PS, and 177 PS, and buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Crafter also offers front, rear, or all-wheel drive configurations, depending on the model.
